Man accused of having methamphetamine at shooting range

A 42-year-old Manhattan man was arrested at the state shooting range on suspicion of possessing items that allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine.

The man, Andrew Doyal Kaufman, was jailed shortly after an investigation that began after someone told authorities Kaufman was at the state shooting range south of Two Dog Road on April 1. He had been under bond conditions preventing him from legally possessing firearms, according to a complaint a sheriff’s deputy filed in county justice court.

As a deputy drove into the parking area, Kaufman was seen retreating from view, it’s alleged.

[The deputy] hailed Kaufman on the PA from his patrol vehicle,” reads the complaint. “Kaufman then came back into view and met [the deputy.”

Kaufman reportedly gave permission for a search of his vehicle. Deputies reported finding a glass smoking pipe, a razor blade, a foreign currency bill, a spoon, a small handheld pick tool, and a broken glass smoking pipe.

“These items were tested using a field NIK test kit,” reads the complaint. “All of the items tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine.”

Deputies allegedly found boxes of unspent ammunition in Kaufman’s vehicle and unspent rounds on his person. No firearms were found there or in the area even after a K-9 dog search, according to the complaint.

The deputy who arrested Kaufman advised that he be prosecuted on a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
