Missoula M gets major refresh before UM graduation

Missoula, Mont. — The University of Montana has been giving its landmark "M" a major refresh ahead of graduation on May 9.

The work has taken hours from staff and volunteers as crews stripped away old paint, sealed cracks and added primer before a new finish. The university had been preparing the letter for the same paint used on the Hollywood sign in California.

Jamie Kirby, the natural areas manager for the University of Montana, said the project mattered far beyond campus.

"It is the most hiked trail in Montana, sees almost 1000 users daily [during] busy summer months. And it is the pride of the university [and] the entire community of Missoula," said Kirby.

Kirby said she believes this is the first time the "M" had gone through such an extensive overhaul. She also said the support behind the effort has stood out.

"It takes the effort of an entire community to take care of such an amazing landmark. So, everybody always comes up and appreciates the M, and we have a lot of outdoor enthusiasts here, so we're just showing what we're proud of," said Kirby.

Kirby said the goal has been to put the final coat on before the University of Montana's commencement on May 9.
