Missoula police share 4/20 reminder on drug-impaired driving

MISSOULA, Mont. — According to the Missoula Police Department (MPD), driving under the influence of drugs is illegal and they urged people to plan ahead before getting on the road around on April 20.

MPD reported drugs, including marijuana, can affect reaction time, cognitive performance and a driver’s ability to stay in a lane. Its changes can increase the risk of crashes.

“Driving while impaired by any substance — legal or illegal — puts you and others in harm’s way,” said Sergeant Swartz. “It’s a common and dangerous misconception that people drive better when they are high."

According to a NHTSA study from 2019-2021. It found that 26% of drivers seriously injured or killed in crashes tested positive for marijuana.

Additionally, MPD said people who see a friend preparing to drive while high should take away the keys and help arrange a sober ride home. Anyone who spots an impaired driver should contact local law enforcement.
