Missoula police warn renters after fake Craigslist scam

Missoula, Mont. — Missoula police are urging people looking for a place to live to be careful online after several renters were tricked by a fake home listing on Craigslist.

In a Facebook post, the Missoula Police Department said officers received reports that someone with no connection to the property listed a home for rent and took payments from multiple people. When those renters got there to move in, they learned the house was already lived in and was never available.

Police said the listing was later flagged for removal, but warned that rental scams like this are still common.

The department urged renters to be extra cautious before paying money or signing any rental agreement. Police said unusually cheap listings can be a red flag and warned people not to send deposits through wire transfers, gift cards or payment apps to strangers.

Police also advised renters to confirm who owns the property through public records or a reputable property management company.

The department said it is also smart to meet the landlord or property manager in person and see the property before handing over money. Police said people should be wary if someone says they are out of town and cannot show the home.

The Facebook post said scammers often try to rush people into making quick decisions. Police said taking time to check out a listing can help people avoid losing money and added stress.

Anyone who thinks they may have been targeted should contact local law enforcement and report the listing on the website where it appeared.
