Montana DNRC warns about potential flooding as temperatures rise

HELENA, Mont. - Recent bouts of rain and snow have helped strengthen the snowpack in the mountains across Montana, but as temperatures climb, the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) is warning residents to be wary of changing conditions potential flooding as the snowpack begins to melt.

The DNRC said those living near rivers or streams may be particularly impacted, and should consider developing a flood evacuation safety plan. Recommendations include purchasing flood insurance (as most homeowner insurance policies do not cover damage from floods), make sure you have enough drinking water stored away, and keep important documents and valuables elevated and available.

"Warm temperatures combined with rain or additional snow may lead to severe flooding in some areas," the department said in a press release. "Communities still recovering from previous floods or wildfires may face heightened risk."
