Montana joins foster care effort

HELENA, Mont. - Montana is joining a federal effort aimed at expanding safe foster homes for children across the state.

Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Montana would take part in "A Home for Every Child," a program focused on strengthening foster care.

The initiative worked to increase the number of safe homes by recruiting more caregivers, giving priority to relatives and improving retention for current caregivers.

Its goal was to push the foster home-to-child ratio above 1:1 in every state.

The effort had support through an executive order from President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump's whole-of-government commitment to change outcomes for children in foster care.

According to the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, 1,749 Montana children were in foster care, down from more than 3,300 in early 2021.

That marked a 47% decrease.
