Montana SNAP waiver blocks some high-sugar foods from benefits

MONTANA — State leaders are moving to stop Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from being used on several sugary products after federal approval cleared the way for the change.

Governor Greg Gianforte recently announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved the state's request to limit which items people can buy through the program.

Under the waiver, SNAP benefits will no longer cover soft drinks, candy, energy drinks and some prepared desserts.

State leaders said the change aimed to encourage healthier eating habits and lower diet-related health problems.

The governor's office noted that the policy focused on products high in sugar, which health officials linked to obesity, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Milk, 100% fruit juice and other nutrient-dense foods will reportedly still be allowed through the program.
