Powell County warns residents of Homeland Security scam calls

POWELL COUNTY, Mont. – The Powell County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents about a recent scam involving fraudsters impersonating U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.

An Ovando resident recently received such a call with a similar report from a Deer Lodge resident.

The Sheriff's Office emphasized that the DHS does not call to solicit money, demand personal information, or threaten arrest. These scams use fake caller ID and can spoof legitimate phone numbers.

Officials urge residents to hang up immediately if a caller claims to be from DHS or immigration officials and requests payment or sensitive information.

If you suspect a call is legitimate, hang up and verify by calling DHS directly at 202-282-8000.
