Ravalli County officials to hold meeting on proposed roads levy

The Ravalli County Commissioners are holding a public meeting at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 9,  to discuss a proposed mill levy for the 2026 June ballot regarding county roads.

The commissioners have determined they are short on funds for county roads by $2.9 million per year. There are 300 miles of paved road and 250 miles of gravel road that the county is in charge of upkeep for.

According to the resolution posted in the agenda for the meeting, the proposed levy is for 10 years, up to $2.9 million per year, raising around 26.66 mills each year "for the purpose of improving public safety by paying for the cost materials ONLY, not to include labor or equipment, related to the expenses of constructing, maintaining, repairing and/or improving County maintained roads" the document states.

Included in the resolution is estimated increases for property taxes:

"If this mill levy passes, using currently assessed taxable values of property in Ravalli County, it is estimated the increase in property taxes on homes would be as follows: a $100,000 home would be approximately $20.26 per year, a $300,000 home would be approximately $60.79 per year, a $600,000 home would be approximately $130.55 per year, and a $900,000 home would be approximately $212.14 per year. An increase in property taxes may lead to an increase in rental costs."
