Rocky Boy Health Center monitoring reports of veterinary sedative in illicit drugs

BOX ELDER, Mont. — Rocky Boy Health Center is warning the community about medetomidine, a sedative that health officials say has been found in fentanyl in some parts of the country.

According to a press release from Rocky Boy Health Center, Montana health officials have limited data so far. The drug has been found in two seized samples statewide and there have been no confirmed overdose deaths in Montana linked to it.

The health center said it had not confirmed medetomidine in the Rocky Boy community or service area. Still, it said it wanted people to know the risks tied to changes in the drug supply.

RBHC psychologist Dr. Deborah Essert said naloxone still matters during a suspected overdose.

“Community members should continue administering Narcan during a suspected overdose even if another substance like medetomidine may also be involved,” Dr. Essert said. “Narcan can still reverse the opioid effects of fentanyl and save lives. We encourage people to carry additional doses of Narcan, call 911 immediately and continue providing rescue measures until emergency responders arrive.”

The health center urged people to carry naloxone, get medical help right away during a suspected overdose and seek support services when needed.
