UPDATED: Missoula NextDoor removes AI-hallucinated alert of a fabricated shooting

An official-seeming safety alert appeared on Missoula's NextDoor page around noon Monday, bearing an eye-catching yellow banner reading "shooting" that pinned the post to the top of the feed.

The problem? It didn't happen. A man was not shot in the leg in Rose Park, and the police are not seeking information from people in the area.

NextDoor is a social media page that allows people to post things that are visible to other accounts in their neighborhood.

NextDoor removed the post late Monday night after the Missoulian reported the post for incorrect information.

According to Missoula Police Department public information officer Whitney Bennett, the alert was false. Bennett isn't sure who runs the "Safety Alerts" profile or where they get their information, but the account is not affiliated with the Missoula Police Department.
