Women's tennis back on the court

At the start of the 2020-21 academic year, the status of the tennis season at Montana State was in question, along with that of many other sports. February brought good news for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams as they were able to participate in their first matches. The men started their season off with a victory against Idaho State on Saturday, Feb. 6, and repeated the win on Sunday, Feb. 7. Unfortunately, the remaining matches in February were canceled for the Bobcats men’s team. The next men’s tennis match will take place on Friday, March 12, against Seattle U.

The women started their season against Gonzaga. The Exponent had the opportunity to speak with Bobcat Senior Laura Mary about her expectations for the season. Before the season began, Mary mentioned her fear that a full season would occur. “Given the [COVID-19] situation, we are likely not going to have a full season. However, I appreciate the effort that the athletic department and our coaches are doing as they are adapting well to the situation at hand,” Mary said. Thankfully, the team has been able to get in four matches so far and their next match is scheduled for Saturday, March 13, against Portland State.

“I am optimistic that our team will stay strong and this will bring us closer together. We have never been this motivated to play, the team is looking great on the court and we are all very excited,” Mary said. While the women’s team has not quite seen the success they are looking for to kick off this season, the team’s optimism demonstrates its mental strength.

Mary is unsure where she will be headed after this semester ends, but she had some wonderful parting words for MSU. “I am happy and thankful that I will be leaving Montana State with all the knowledge I have gained and the fun experiences that will remain good memories forever,” she said. “Additionally, tennis has given me the opportunity to make my dream of moving to another country come true. I feel like I am a well-rounded person after having experienced a whole new culture, and I am forever thankful for all that this sport has given me.”
