Beara and Butte bond: Ireland peninsula celebrates its historic ties to the Mining City

The historic link between Ireland’s Beara Peninsula and Butte continues to be celebrated.

This St. Patrick’s Day, the people living on the peninsula on Ireland's southwest coast are remembering the stories of their ancestors who once lived and worked in the mining town of Butte and are flying Montana flags in villages on the peninsula.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many people from Beara left their homeland and emigrated to the United States in search of work and opportunity. Many of them made their way to Butte.

In May 2025, 55 people from the Beara Peninsula descended on Butte to learn more about their ancestors that helped to shape the Mining City.

Jim Sullivan, a spokesperson for the Beara delegation, said Butte was one of the most important destinations for Irish emigrants due to its booming copper mining industry.

During the delegation’s visit last year, the men and women of Beara were presented with six State of Montana flags.

In celebration of the close link between Beara and Butte, those Montana flags are now being flown in villages across the Beara Peninsula, including Ardgroom and Castletownbere.

Sullivan said the 2025 visit was a meaningful occasion that recognized the shared heritage between Beara and the many Irish emigrants who helped shape Butte’s history.

“The gesture symbolized the lasting friendship and historic ties between the people of Beara and the community of Butte,” he said.

According to Sullivan, those who emigrated to Butte brought with them a strong sense of community, culture and resilience.

“Their hard work played a significant role in the development of Butte and helped shape its strong Irish identity,” said Sullivan. “Although they were thousands of miles from home, they maintained close connections with their families and traditions in Beara.”

Sullivan said the displaying of the Montana flags was done out of respect and appreciation for the long-standing bond between the two regions.

“This tradition honors the memory of those who emigrated and serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between Beara and Butte, connecting past generations with the present,” he said.
