BOZEMAN, Mont. – A new initiative, the Produce R-X program, is enhancing access to healthy food for community members and patients at Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center. The program partners with the HRDC's food bank services to provide nutritious options.

Collin Harrington, a shopper at Town and Country, shared his thoughts on the program.

“This is actually the first time I’ve heard of the produce R-X program, but I think it’s a great idea," he said. "You know, I came from an action sports background, so health was very important to me. So, you know, a lot of doctors that I’ve talked to have talked about health and like eating the right foods instead of just taking pills”, said Harrington.

The Produce R-X program does more than just provide food. It offers educational opportunities, including classes on healthy eating patterns, cooking with kids, and meal prep.

Will Roegge, another shopper, emphasized the potential for long-term benefits because of the program.

“I think long-term, it’s great because if you have family’s or individuals implementing this, it’s kind of a trickle-down effect where it's like, just learning, you know, what’s in season, what’s good, and the benefits of different fruits and vegetables, will serve communities and families for a lifetime and generationally,” he said.

In a statement, HRDC expressed their enthusiasm for the partnership.

“We’re really excited about this partnership because it helps us to better feed our neighbors in a way that supports their health, dignity, and long-term stability,” the statement said.

Bozeman Health also provided a statement to Nonstop Local.

They say, “We recognize that access to nutritious food is a critical part of preventive care and overall well-being,” says Kami Panepucci, System Manager of Community Health Improvement and Partnerships.

“Through the Produce RX program and our partnership with HRDC, we’re able to support not only individual patients, but their entire families. By connecting households with healthy food options and educational resources, we’re helping build lifelong habits that improve health outcomes across generations.”

Similar Produce R-X programs exist nationwide across twelve different states; However, this program is the first of its kind in Montana.

The Produce R-X program is currently accepting referrals, and those interested can contact their Bozeman Health care provider for more information.
