Butte man gets prison time for illegal firearms

MISSOULA – A 49-year-old man from Butte is headed to prison for 37 months, followed by three years of supervised release, after being caught with illegal firearms, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced.

According to a press release, the Butte man admitted guilt in October 2025 to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. The sentencing took place under the watch of District Judge Dana L. Christensen.

Law enforcement searched his Butte home on November 27, 2024, after receiving tips about firearm possession. Before the search, he confessed to having prohibited items.

During the search, authorities uncovered five firearms and ammunition, including a .22 caliber rifle and a shotgun with a shortened barrel.

His past felony convictions for distributing and possessing dangerous drugs made firearm ownership illegal. These convictions happened in Flathead County in 2018 and Yellowstone County in 2023, each punishable by more than a year in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Katy Stack handled the prosecution, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation.
