Why did you decide to run for office?

Kortum: I was blessed to have amazing teachers that encouraged me to be better every day and improve the world around me. Montana public schools helped prepare me for college at MSU and the real world and I want to ensure our youth today have the same (or better) opportunities and resources.

What do you think is the biggest issue MSU students should have on their radar? What state action would you support to address that issue?

Kortum: One of the most alarming developments directly affecting students is the assault on democracy and free speech on university campuses. The legislature passed bills limiting 1st Amendment rights in dining and residence halls (courts blocked), and attempted a few more bills to limit or defund student groups on campus.

The biggest issue is housing, more about that below.

What steps should the legislature take to address climate change and mitigate its impact on Montanans?

Kortum: The legislature should be working to utilize Montana’s vast wind and solar resources to mitigate climate change. This adds stability to our economy, improves our competitiveness, and provides good job opportunities to our graduates as well.

What action would you support to make housing more affordable in Bozeman?

Kortum: This is the top issue in my district and all of Bozeman. Workforce housing will help. Offsetting local property taxes (and therefore rent) by properly funding local schools with state funds. Limiting vacation rentals/2nd homes so folks who actually live here can live here. Constructing more housing.

It will take a lot of careful adjustments to make progress.

Why should MSU students, faculty and staff vote for you?

Kortum: I will continue to support Montana higher ed, a livable community for ALL Montanans, and your constitutional right to privacy.

What do you love about Bozeman? How would that reflect in your policy-making decisions?

Kortum: I love the buzz. We are a college town, a ski town, and a destination, all at once.

My votes will again reflect my belief that we all deserve to live here.
