Michael J. Courtney

November 20, 1938 - March 13, 2026

BUTTE - Michael J. "Mike" Courtney, 87, passed away peacefully on the evening of March 13, 2026, at Big Sky Senior Living. Michael was born on November 20, 1938, in Butte to Elizabeth and Edward Courtney. He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from Boys Central High School.

Upon graduation he was employed by the FBI until joining the U.S. Army where he served with great pride from 1961 to 1964. He received an honorable discharge and returned to the FBI. He then became the administrator of Highland View Manor and Columbus Plaza where he finished his career. In 1994, The Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce presented him with the McGrath Award for his dedication and compassion in building affordable quality senior housing.

Michael attained Honorary Life Membership in the 3rd and 4th Degrees of the Knights of Columbus. In the Butte Council #668, he held all offices and in the state organization several elected offices. In 1976, Michael joined AA and recently celebrated 50 years of sobriety.

Michael had a passion for classic automobiles including several hardtops and convertibles. At his cabin in Buxton, he enjoyed bird-watching and plowing snow in his Ford F150 and found companionship in his loving felines.

Michael was known for his great sense of humor and enjoyed socializing with the "Gamers Crew." He was passionate about politics and decried the antics of the current Administration. A man of deep faith, he watched daily Mass on the Catholic channel. A fan of YouTube, he enjoyed videos of the New York City Fire Department, marching bands, and professional wrestling.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Father Edward, John, and James. His survivors include his sister-in-law, Ann Marie Courtney, nephews John and Marcus Courtney, sister-in-law, Agnes Courtney and nieces Cindy and Ginger Courtney, great niece, Courtney Petche, great nephews, Kevin and Benjamin Courtney, Alec Petche, and Spenser Browning. In addition to close friends Mark Sanderson and Michael Gribben.

At his request, private interment will be held in the spring. Donations in Michael's name may be made to The Michael J. Courtney Endowment Scholarship at Butte Central High School, or Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butte, PO Box 62, Butte, MT 59703.
