FAT Ice Race Debuts In Big Sky, Montana

BIG SKY, Mont. – The FAT Ice Race, a high-speed motorsport event, made its way to Big Sky, Montana for the first time in the events history.  

This event was part of a two-day showcase held at Moonlight Basin.  

The Fat Ice Races first started in Austria in 1952, as a tribute to Ferdinand Porsche.  

The extreme sport had been dormant until 2019, when Porche’s great-grandson Ferdi Porsche helped the event make a return. As part of the revival, Porsche also expanded the FAT Ice races from international-only competition to include the United States.  

Now, for the first time, the event was held in Big Sky, featuring a weekend packed with racing and music.  

Kaz Sosnkowski, a race patron, reflected on what being at such an event means to him.  

"This has been such a cool event to like, witness; and like, I’d never thought I’d be seeing this many multi-million dollar cars and especially let alone seeing them drive on ice and snow slushed out snow, it’s been sweet. It’s been super cool," said Sosnkowski.  

The event featured races in various categories, including buggies, four-wheel drive cars, and classic two-wheel drive vehicles.  

While FAT Ice races are a showing of the best from around the world competing in motorsports, it is also a celebration of car culture.  

Irina Dolbinina, another race patron, highlighted the atmosphere.  

"It’s an atmosphere of a lot of passion here, and passion whether that be the cars, the music, the, you know, the community," said Dolbinina.  

Elvira Chuk, also attending, added, "I may not understand everything in the car world or the industry, but seeing other people so passionate is what draws me to it."  

The two-day event, held from February 27 to 28, also attracted some big names in the world of entertainment.  

Grammy-nominated rapper Don Toliver was among those in attendance and shared his thoughts.  

"The vibes here is so fun, so happy, so much love and energy. So many different people with so many great cars from all across the world is here and it just feels great, man," said Toliver.  

While the FAT Ice races are traditionally held in Austria with only one race per year, the event has explored adding multiple races in a calendar year and expanding their reach into the United States. 

A spokesperson with FAT Ice Race tells Nonstop Local that after the success of the events first year in Big Sky, the international racing competition plans to return to the Treasure State in 2027.
