I-90 bridge work near Alberton will close river access area

ALBERTON, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation announced work would start this spring to replace the westbound I-90 bridge over the Clark Fork River about 9.5 miles west of Alberton.

MDT reported the project is part of the Clark Fork River/Old Hwy 10 Bridges work and is expected to take two years, with completion anticipated in fall 2027. The department said crews will also paint the I-90 bridge over Old Highway 10 and Elizabeth Lane this year.

Drivers should plan for single-lane traffic, lower speed limits and possible width and length restrictions. MDT advised travelers to follow posted signs and watch for workers.

The department said construction depends on weather and other unforeseen factors.

MDT also announced Old Highway 10 West would be closed to the public between Tarkio East Fishing Access and Triple Bridges – Alberton Gorge Recreational Access. That closure restricts access to the east bank of the Clark Fork River.

The river section will stay open for recreation during the 2026 construction season. Still, the public cannot enter the closed recreation area at any point to reach the Clark Fork River.

Tarkio East Fishing Access Road will remain open at this time.
