I-90 construction between Belgrade and Bozeman begins April 13

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation announced construction will begin April 13 on I-90 between Belgrade and Bozeman.

MDT said crews will start with work on the I-90 bridges over Valley Spur Road. That will reduce traffic to one lane on the bridges for about two weeks and drivers should expect minor delays.

A 15-foot width restriction will be in place during the bridge work.

The project stretches from just east of the Belgrade Airway Boulevard Interchange at Exit 299 to the North Rouse Avenue railroad overpass in Bozeman. MDT said the work is meant to extend the roadway’s life and improve safety.

Planned upgrades include resurfacing the road, updating pavement markings, signs and guardrail and making minor bridge improvements.

Starting April 19, crews will begin milling and paving at night to reduce traffic impacts. MDT said that work was expected from about 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays with two lanes reopening during the day.

Crews also expected to set up detours when work starts on I-90 on- and off-ramps so new pavement can cure properly.

The project is expected to wrap up by late summer or early fall 2026
