Inquest jury rules October 2025 lethal police shooting in Belgrade was justified

BELGRADE, Mont. - An inquest jury with the Gallatin County Coroner's Office determined that lethal use of force was justified in an October 2025 police shooting that killed 37-year-old Devin Scheurn.

When Belgrade police first responded to a 911 call and arrived at the scene on October 27, 2025, Scheurn's parents "indicated Scheurn was in crisis and likely possessed firearms," according to the Gallatin County Attorney's Office.

According to a press release from the Gallatin County Attorney's Office, body camera footage showed Scheurn walking toward the patrol car of Sergeant Jarrod Robinson while firing a pistol. Robinson was shot in the shoulder before BPD Officer Mitch Good fatally shot Scheurn. 

"After reviewing all testimony and evidence, the jury determined that Officer Good reasonably believed Sgt. Robinson was at risk of serious bodily injury or death at the time force was used," the Gallatin County Attorney's Office wrote. "Based on these findings, the jury concluded that the death did not occur by criminal means."

The jury heard testimony from the officers involved in the incident, a forensic pathologist, an a Montana Division of Criminal Investigation agent.

"Law enforcement officers put themselves on the line every time they go out on patrol, often facing rapidly evolving and dangerous situations,” Gallatin County Attorney Audrey Cromwell said. "I am thankful Sgt. Robinson was not killed. The jury found that Officer Good acted reasonably under those circumstances and in accordance with the law. While any loss of life is deeply tragic, this process provides a thorough and public review so the community can understand what occurred."
