Lewis and Clark County sheriff warns about traffic ticket scam

HELENA, Mont. — The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning of a scam message claiming people had an unpaid traffic ticket and threatening penalties.

The message said payment had to be made by April 1, 2026, and claimed it would report a violation to the DMV database, suspend vehicle registration and suspend driving privileges for 30 days.

It also claimed the case would be sent to a toll booth with a 35% service fee and warned of prosecution and credit score damage, according to the scam text shared by the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office identified the message as a scam and warned the public not to treat it as a real enforcement notice.
