Local Bozeman farm seeks new land for expansion amid shrinking leases

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Chance Farm in Bozeman is seeking to expand its operations as its current leases are set to shrink over the next few years. 

The farm, owned and managed by Josh Chance, is looking to lease around 10 acres of land to continue its growth. 

Chance stated that the farm would need to be able to install deer fencing and set up an irrigation system. The farm crew would also require easy access to the property. The farm's main property is located off Gooch Hill Road, and they hope to find land within a 15-minute drive from there. 

Chance explained the challenges faced by local producers due to rising property costs in Bozeman. 

"Leasing land to farmers — it's not like a big moneymaker. This is going to be more for the person who's wanting to lease land to help sustain agriculture and help new farmers," he said. 

Chance started Chance Farm in 2018. The farm supplies fresh produce to local grocery stores and restaurants in the Gallatin Valley, including Town and Country, the Bozeman Co-op, Blackbird, Bridger Brewing, and Hooked Sushi. They also operate a CSA program, offering families weekly packages of fresh produce throughout the summer. Sign-ups for the summer 2026 CSA program are open
