MONTANA — Local businesses in Montana are navigating the complexities of tax season, with many seeking to understand their current tax burdens compared to previous years. Kendall Hudson from NonStop Local spoke with Nancy Kieffer, owner of Kieffer Tax Firm, for insights.

Kieffer works with small businesses across western Montana. She noted that business owners often feel they are paying more due to a combination of factors, not just a single tax line.

"There have been recently more changes to Montana tax returns, both individual and businesses," said Kieffer. "And one thing that businesses are worried about is because it seems to be that the, individual property tax owners are not paying as much, which means it shifts the burden to commercial properties. And of course, that is challenging, especially in these economic times where businesses, in commercial property have to pick up more of the tax burden for the state."

Kieffer explained that higher property valuations, payroll costs and changes in deductions can all impact what a business owes at the end of the year. Compared to previous years, some business owners are operating on tighter margins, making even modest tax increases feel significant.

Looking ahead, many clients are already planning for the next year. They are inquiring about business structure, write-offs and potential changes that could affect their bottom line.

Kieffer emphasized that while each business is different, understanding how multiple costs—not just tax rates—can influence the final amount paid is crucial.
