Madison County warns residents about permit payment scam
Scam Alert

VIRGINIA CITY, Mont. — The Madison County Sheriff's Office warned residents that the FBI had flagged a phishing scam involving people posing as local government officials to collect fake planning and zoning permit payments.

The sheriff's office said the scam had been reported across the country and could look real to residents in Madison County.

People are urged not to click on links in messages they did not know or were not expecting. They also said people should not share personal or financial information through those messages.

The sheriff's office said law enforcement would never ask for payment that way.

If someone got a suspicious message, officials said they should delete it and report it to the Madison County Sheriff's Office non-emergency number at 406-843-5301.
