MDT seeking comment on proposed I-15 median, guardrail through Helena

A highway median and guardrail could be built on 30 miles of Interstate 15 surrounding and through Helena if a plan the Montana Department of Transportation proposed March 18 is adopted.

“The purpose of the project is to enhance safety by addressing median related crossover crashes on the interstate,” the department said in a news release. “Construction is tentatively planned for 2030, depending on completion of design and availability of funds.”

But before the project gets too far, MDT is calling for public comment.

"Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects," the department said. "MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project."

The project would involve the flattening of median slopes and installation of a high-tension cable guardrail extending from mile marker 174, or 2 miles south of Jefferson City, to mile marker 204, or 9 miles north of Helena on the way to Great Falls.

Utility relocations and new rights-of-way wouldn’t be needed, the press release states.

Public input is encouraged to be submitted at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to the Great Falls MDT office at P.O. Box 1359.
