Missoula County residents warned of phone scam involving fake car wrecks

MISSOULA COUNTY, Mont. — Residents are being warned about a scam involving fraudsters posing as victims of a car accident.

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) announced the scam on Wednesday via a Facebook post, alerting locals that they may receive calls from individuals claiming a loved one has been in a car wreck and needs money for care.

Authorities urged residents to be cautious, emphasizing that this is most likely a scam.

"Your best defense is to identify the hospital that needs the information, HANG UP THE PHONE, and call that hospital directly," MCSO officials stated.

Authorities also warned against sharing or sending money without verifying the information is correct.
