Montana domestic crime reports show long-term trend as local agencies act

MONTANA — Information from the Montana Board of Crime Control and local law enforcement agencies showed domestic crimes reported in Montana totaled in the thousands each year from 2015 to 2024 as agencies in Bozeman and Yellowstone County shared awareness efforts.

The information defined domestic crimes as criminal acts aimed at family members, spouses or intimate partners. It showed reported cases rose from more than 5,500 in 2015 to more than 7,000 in 2021 before declining to just more than 6,600 in 2024.

In the Gallatin Valley, the Bozeman Police Department's Special Victims Unit investigated many domestic crimes. The information said that work included sexual crimes and crimes against children.

Bozeman police announced a Sexual Assault Awareness Night on April 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Bozeman Public Safety Center.

In Yellowstone County, the Billings Police Department said some detectives helped plant blue pinwheels in front of City Hall this week as part of child abuse awareness efforts. The information said the pinwheels were used as a symbol for child abuse prevention.

People were encouraged to wear blue the following day in support of child abuse awareness.
