Montana state senator pushes ballot measure to cap property tax increases at 2%

MONTANA — A Montana state senator is working to put a constitutional initiative on the November ballot that would cap local property tax increases at 2% per year.

State Senator Wylie Galt says the measure is in response to rising property taxes across Montana.

The cap would apply to all kinds of property, including residential, commercial, agricultural, industrial and timber.

The ballot measure would also put certain limits on increases to assessed values based on improvements or additions to a property.

A constitutional initiative must be reviewed by state officials and then gain the necessary signatures to qualify for the ballot.
