Montana’s Leaders Push For Mining’s Role In National Energy Plan

BUTTE, Mont. – Leaders responsible for managing federal lands and natural resources are emphasizing the importance of Montana's mining industry in the nation's energy plan.  

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and U.S. Congressman Ryan Zinke visited Montana Tech University on Friday morning to explore the future of mining in Montana.  

Burgum and Zinke were led on a tour of the university's mineral labs to gain insight into this industry.  

The tour highlighted Montana Tech's leadership in mining practices such as mapping and data collection for creating visuals of geologic features.  

"Everyone’s heard the President talk about 'drill baby drill', which is a euphemism for energy abundance. But we also need to 'mine baby mine', but before we mine, we need to 'map baby map'," said Secretary Burgum.  

Following the tour, a roundtable discussion focused on the future of mining in Montana and nationwide.  

During the discussion, Congressman Zinke shared his views on balancing environmental oversight with increased mineral production.  

"I think they both can be complimentary. You know, mining techniques and technology has changed a lot. I think you should learn from the past. But new technology should be introduced; this is what a mining plan looks like. You know, a mining plan is in detail. And the reclamation is a part of it," Zinke said.  

The event concluded with Burgum and Zinke posing for photos and engaging with attendees.
