MSU’s AMA Case Team Named Finalist in International Competition

The student team of the American Marketing Association (AMA) at MSU participated in the AMA Case Competition and was named one of 11 finalists that will present its marketing plan to this year’s sponsor, Cotton Incorporated. Presentations will take place Thursday, March 12 in New Orleans at the annual AMA International Collegiate Conference (ICC). The MSU case team will present its marketing plan to a panel of judges consisting of Cotton Incorporated executives and board members of the North Carolina-based nonprofit organization.

This is the second time in just three years of competing in the AMA Case Competition that a team from MSU has reached the finals. The first team presented to executives from Mary Kay, the case sponsor in 2017-18. MSU’s marketing plan was chosen as one of the best by a panel of marketing academics out of more than 100 universities entering the competition.

“I am looking forward to this year’s case competition,” said Lion Mason, a senior marketing major from Colorado Springs. “I know our team has worked extremely hard on this plan all year and I cannot wait to present it to the executives of Cotton Incorporated. I know our team has the potential to win.”

Cotton Incorporated challenged student teams to market and promote cotton to an audience  that is less informed about cotton, 13–18 year olds, and to educate this cohort on why it is important to seek out and buy cotton apparel. The challenge for teams included determining how cotton can be relevant to this audience and increasing their propensity to search for and likelihood to purchase cotton apparel.

“We are so incredibly proud of our AMA chapter,” said Mark Ranalli, Dean of Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship. “This is just another example of how our students consistently demonstrate their talents on a national level.”

“Researching, writing, and editing skills are what I expected to improve with my participation in the Case Competition,” said Kylee Gamradt, a recent graduate of the MSU marketing program and head of the competition team’s research efforts. “On top of these skills, I also grew in my ability to work with a team and experienced the pressure and expectation of working with a real client. After attending last year’s final presentation of the winning team, I am determined to win the competition this year."

The American Marketing Association is the student lead chapter of the AMA at MSU.
