New Montana law changes shed antler collection on state lands

MONTANA — A new state law is altering how shed antlers can be collected on Montana's wildlife management areas. This change affects both residents and nonresidents looking to collect antlers dropped by deer, elk and other wildlife.

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the rule is specific to state wildlife management areas. Many of these areas remain closed throughout the winter to protect animals residing there during the colder months. When these areas reopen, they often draw crowds eager to find shed antlers.

A new requirement mandates that nonresidents must obtain a shed hunting license, which costs $50. Additionally, if a wildlife management area has a seasonal closure, residents are given the first seven days of access before nonresidents can enter.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks advises checking land access rules before venturing out. They also remind everyone that private land requires landowner permission for access.
