One of Montana's longest-running winter races gets underway this weekend

SEELEY LAKE, Mont. — This weekend, the 47th Annual Snow Joke Half Marathon will bring over 700 runners, walkers and nearly 100 dogs to Seeley Lake.

The event, hosted by Run Wild Missoula, is one of Montana's longest-running winter races.

Trisha Drobeck, Executive Director of Run Wild Missoula, emphasized the community spirit of the race.

"This race has always been about community, spirit and a little bit of adventure," said Drobeck. "People show up ready to laugh, layer up and celebrate winter and movement together — and the dogs might be the most excited participants of all."

The canine division is a highlight, with nearly 100 dogs expected to join their humans on the course. Aid stations will provide water and treats for the pups, courtesy of Toiffer Pet Outfitter.

A notable change this year is the closure of the historic Boy Scout Bridge, which has been closed since late 2023 due to decay.

Despite this, the race will continue on an alternate course.

"We know how much runners love the original Snow Joke course — we do too," Drobeck said. "As soon as the bridge is repaired, we hope to bring the iconic loop back."

The event supports Seeley Lake Elementary School and includes donations to the Seeley Lake Elementary Ski Team and the Seeley Lake Community Foundation.

Participants will finish the race at Seeley Lake Elementary School, where a post-race celebration will feature pancakes from The Resort at Paws Up.
