Park County Rural Fire Chief Honored With ‘Spirit Of Montana’ Award

Livingston, Mont. — Park County Rural Fire Chief Dann Babcox received Governor Greg Gianforte’s ‘Spirit of Montana’ Award on Thursday, April 2nd, as he prepares to step away from his role as fire chief.  

The award was presented during an afternoon event at the Park County District Fire Station in Livingston.  

It recognizes leaders in Montana for their accomplishments, dedication, and service to their local communities.  

Babcox began with the Park County Fire District 25 years ago as a volunteer firefighter. As he begins a new chapter, Babcox says he wants to pass along what he has learned in those years to the next generation.  

“Doing this job has to be about helping others. It cannot be about your paycheck; it cannot be about your retirement plan; it can’t be about you. It has to be about the public,” Babcox said. 

When asked what advice he would give to those looking to become first responders, the now-former fire chief emphasized service to the local community.  

“It has to be about serving the public, protecting the public and making every place that we go better, or at least not letting it get any worse. So, if you’re planning on becoming an emergency responder that has to be the biggest goal in your mind is to be there for the public,” he said.  

Governor of Montana Greg Gianforte joined the event in Livingston and recognized Babcox’s years of service in Park County.  

“The best thing about Montana is the people, and Chief Dann Babcox has served Park County for 25 years. He was nominated for his leadership, his humility, his professionalism, and it was really great to have a whole fire team here together and recognize him for his service to the community,” Gianforte said.
