Pi Omega Theta (POT) has historically had a difficult time keeping its house clean, but now the frat house is now unexpectedly glowing. With a new vacuum in tow, POT president Nicholas Taylor was ecstatic to talk to the Excrement about the frat’s new look.
“At a certain point [all the brothers] looked at each other and just decided, this is ridiculous. [POT’S] house was so disgusting, so we did some Googling about what we should do,” Taylor said.
The result was an overhaul of the budget to fund the cleaning journey, limiting the house to three parties each semester. “I think it's totally worth it, dude. The cleaner the house is, the more people will come to our parties,” Taylor said.
To make the renovations, the house organized a Cleaning Squad, a Decoration Squad and a Bathroom Remodel Squad. According to Kurt Hewitt, the leader of the Cleaning Squad, all groups have been pulling their weight.
“Sometimes the Decoration Squad is working on a room at the same time as [the Cleaning Squad], and it’s actually really cool to see a room progress all at once,” he said.
Hewitt explained that the most essential part of the do over was washing the walls and floors. “We went through four Costco packs of Magic Erasers for our walls and about six Swiffer refill packs. The house doesn't smell like beer anymore and all the brothers' headaches are gone now,” he said.
POT’S Decoration Squad has made many trips to Hobby Lobby and Michaels. They even received consultations from interior design students at MSU and Gallatin College to find the perfect look. Rae Dunn has become an official POT partner and the kitchen at POT is now filled with labelled mugs and jars.
“[The Decoration Squad] really just wanted the house to be fun to be in. All the brothers love it here and we want everyone else to visit here too,” said Blake North, the leader of the Decoration Squad.
The Bathroom Remodel Squad had the most on its plate as a whole restoration needed to be done. According to Taylor, leader of the Bathroom Squad Eric Turner had the most important job in the house.
“The bathroom was brutal, dude. No one wanted to use it and there were fluids everywhere. [POT] needed to hire people to do the initial cleanout because it was considered a biohazard by the state,” Taylor said. “Turner cleaned the bathroom for two weeks and he still has piss on the knees of his pants.”
Turner explained that he feels lucky to be doing the bathroom. “I don’t have to deal with any of the girly stuff like cleaning or decorating. I get to work with my hands like a real man,” he said.
POT ended up removing the shower from its bathroom and replacing it with two more toilets.
“There are two reasons we decided to do that,” Turner said. “One is that we don't really shower at the POT house — we don’t really shower in general — and the other is that girls always go to the bathroom together anyways, and sometimes they end up pissing in the tub. We might as well just give them more toilets.”
