Senator Steve Daines Withdraws From U.S. Senate Race, Community Reacts
BOZEMAN, Mont. — U.S. Senator Steve Daines has announced his withdrawal from the U.S. Senate race, sparking varied reactions among Montanans.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, March 4, just before the deadline for candidates to file.
Brady Henan, a Montana State University student, expressed hope for a candidate who prioritizes local needs.
"I hope we get someone who's a little bit more ‘Montana first’, prioritizing needs and housing for Montana with a rising cost of living, and wage gap that doesn’t really support that cost of living for locals and residents," said Henan.
Daines shared his decision through a video posted on ‘X’, stating, “After much careful thought...I’ve decided not to seek re-election.”
This decision marks a significant change in Montana's political landscape, prompting residents to reflect on Daines' time in office.
Jasper Blanchette, another Montana State University student, commented on Daines' stance on natural resources.
“He doesn’t quite value natural resources which are vastly important to Montana and Montanans in general,” said Blanchette.
Reactions to Daines' announcement varied, with one user on ‘X’ expressing gratitude for his representation: “Senator, when I lived in Montana, I voted for you four times. I am thankful for your great representation. God bless Montana and these great United States.”
However, not everyone shared the same sentiment.
Bailey Evenson, also a student at Montana State University, voiced disappointment in the current leadership.
“Gut reaction, I feel very disappointed in our leadership, just how they’ve been acting with the things that I’ve heard, especially like, acts of violence. It does not feel great. I just feel like we’re in a time where we need such strong leadership, and we’re just not getting that,” said Evenson.
While the future remains uncertain, Daines' team has stated that he is not interested in a position with the Department of Homeland Security.
