Thank you, Peter

Peter Fox, the Exponent’s professional advisor, is stepping down after eight years. His guidance and dedication to this newspaper for close to a decade has helped to increase visibility and strengthen editorial standards beyond a normal college newspaper. Fox advised the Exponent staff concerning content, design, personnel, among other things.

Fox, who is a retired US Army Colonel, has had a long and prosperous career in journalism. He attended University of Wisconsin-Madison in the School of Journalism. There he worked part-time as a reported and copy editor. During grad school, Fox taught a copy-editing course and joined the Wisconsin State Journal full-time. Fox also served as president of the Wisconsin Associated Press Association. After a career at the Billings Gazette as managing editor, Fox moved to Livingston and served as executive director of the Park County Community Foundation, retiring in 2018.

Fox has received numerous awards throughout his career. In 2008, He received a distinguished service award to journalism and the newspaper industry from the UW-Madison School of Journalism. The Daily Cardinal, UW-Madison’s student newspaper since 1892, named him one of the 110 most notable alumni of The Daily Cardinal. Fox was awarded a lifetime achievement award in 2010 from the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council for his work lobbying for public-notice and open-record statutes in Wisconsin. Fox also led the coalition to enact Wisconsin’s Whistleblower Protection Act.

Fox began as professional advisor in 2011 under Editor-in-Chief, Eric Dietrich. Over the past eight years he has helped to grow the Exponent and instilled his passion for journalism in the past and current staffs. Fox will certainly be missed, his dedication to the Exponent is unmatched, as Dietrich put it, “Fox has been the backstop for the Exponent for the past eight years.
