Waterworks Ridge leash rule aims to protect rare Missoula plant

Missoula, Montana — Missoula, Montana Parks and Recreation has announced a temporary leash requirement on the Waterworks Ridge Trail to help protect Missoula Phlox and other sensitive cushion plants during the spring season.

In a Facebook post, Missoula Parks and Recreation said Missoula Phlox is a globally rare native plant found only in the Missoula Valley, and noted that the largest known population of the species is located on Waterworks Ridge.

The city is asking visitors to keep dogs leashed on the Ridge Trail and remain on designated paths to prevent damage to the plant community. More information is available from Missoula Parks and Recreation.

The temporary leash rule applies only to the Ridge Trail. Other nearby areas, including Cherry Gulch, remain under standard leash and voice control regulations.
