Windstorms and power outages prompt ski resort closures

MEAGHER COUNTY, Mont. – Power outages and winds caused ski resorts around Montana to close for the day, including Showdown Montana, Bridger Bowl, Red Lodge Mountain and Great Divide Ski.

Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area also said it was experiencing a power outage but hoped to restore power.

"We will be working with Avista to restore power. We do plan to open if power gets restored," the resort wrote.

Closures

Showdown announced their closure first, saying it closed due to an outage caused by high winds that made it unsafe to operate lift or lodge services.

It asked guests to stay clear of the roads to the ski area while crews work to restore power.

““Please do not attempt to travel to the ski area today. We ask that guests stay clear of the road so utility crews and line workers have space to safely restore power and clear the area. Thank you for your understanding, and we hope to see you back on the mountain soon,” the resort wrote.

Great Divide announced its closure around 7 a.m. and said high winds persisting throughout the day prompted the closure for safety reasons.

Red Lodge Mountain announced its closure for wind-related reasons.

Mountains facing closures commented on the snow, encouraging mountain enjoyers to return on the weekend.

"And yes… it’s snowing hard at 6:30 AM and it snowed throughout the night.

 Forecasts show winds tapering off by late afternoon, so make your plans now for a powder-filled Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Let’s go!" Great Divide wrote.
