Yellowstone County eligible for USDA assistance after last summer's intense hail storm

The federal government announced the designation of Yellowstone, Big Horn and Choteau counties as primary natural disaster areas after sudden hail, high winds and heavy rain struck the areas between June 13 and June 16.

In Yellowstone County, the Shepherd and Huntley Project area were particularly struck hard by hail and winds, with the storm downing power lines, tearing off siding and destroying fields.

The designation of a natural disaster area allows the United States Department of Agriculture to extend emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disaster through loans. The loans can be used to restore or replace property, cover production costs, pay family living expenses and refinance certain debts.

"The aim is to help producers recover swiftly and maintain the viability of their operations during and after disaster recovery," USDA's website stated. Loans will be reviewed based on the extent of losses, financial security and repayment ability.

Counties next to the designated counties are also eligible. More information can be obtained locally at the Farm Service Agency Office or online.
