Montana land use law earns national housing affordability spotlight

MT — Montana’s land use planning law has been named a finalist for a national housing affordability award.

Senate Bill 382 was selected as a finalist for the Ivory Prize for Housing Affordability, which recognizes new ideas aimed at making housing more affordable across the country.

The nomination came as Montana continued to deal with population growth and stronger demand for homes.

Gov. Greg Gianforte said that pressure helped drive the state’s effort to make changes.

"We've seen a remarkable growth in population over the last ten years. And housing starts have just not kept up. And ultimately, homeownership is an integral part of the American dream. And this is why we went to work on bringing housing affordability into closer reach for more Montanans," said Gov. Greg Gianforte.

If Montana wins, the state could receive significant funding and added credibility for its housing efforts.

Finalists were announced in January. The winner has not yet been announced.
